Individual Therapy
I help individuals who struggle with substance abuse unlock a deeper understanding of why they use. People drink and do drugs because they enjoy the effects produced by them, and those who struggle may not even realise at what point substances ceased to be a luxury and became a necessity to cope with their mental and environmental struggles. I focus on the idea that drugs and alcohol are not the problem, but rather a solution, one that allows users to escape their problems while simultaneously exacerbating them. Recovery becomes possible when we better understand the feelings or environmental factors these substances are helping us tolerate.
Having found a new, illuminated understanding of our use, we can begin to discover strategies and behaviors that serve the same function drugs and alcohol did, but take us towards a meaningful life rather than away from it. I understand that everyone’s idea of what recovery looks like may be different, and my goal is to meet clients where they are at while helping them hand over the solution alcohol is providing them with to be replaced with a meaningful life worth living.
Solution must always follow understanding. My clients and I work together to determine what they want in life and what might be standing in the way of it, and it is not until we have identified the functions of their feelings and behavior that we can develop a sustainable course of action. I am patient in this regard. I understand that my client’s willingness to let me get to know them relies on my willingness to do the same, and I approach every individual I serve with curiosity, open-mindedness, and respect.
I work predominantly with adolescents and young adults at any stage in their recovery journeys. I am experienced in DBT, ACT, Psychodynamic, and Substance Abuse Behavioral Therapy. Recovery is possible. As someone who is in recovery, I understand how hard it is to take that first step and ask for help. I am so fortunate to be in a position to support others in their recovery journey, and I would be honored to help you discover a meaningful life.
