Therapy for Pornography Addiction

Humans rely on the reward center of their brain for countless things including motivation, pleasure, the creation of memories, and the ability to gravitate towards certain habits or behaviors. We tend to pull ourselves towards experiences that produce dopamine, a hormone that lets the brain know it is experiencing something desirable. This is a blessing and a curse in modern society, as dopamine has become easier to access and therefore easier to deplete. Sex has always been a dopamine-triggering behavior, but technology has allowed for excessive use of pornography to take its place in a more convenient, easier to access way.

If you struggle with excessive pornography use, it does not mean there is anything inherently flawed about you. Approximately 7% of people in America struggle with pornography addiction, and the solution is not solely in elimination or reduction, but also in finding sustainable practices and behaviors that trigger the reward center in the brain. Recovery is possible.

I want to help my clients sort out when their relationship went from balanced to unhealthy. What set the ball rolling? Have you ever had a balanced relationship with it? What sort of relationship would you like to have with sex moving forward? My work will rely on the identification of values they may have lost touch with amid their struggle as well as the reshaping of their relationship with the reward system in their brain. We will identify triggers and learn how to surf urges without acting on them.

My clients will not feel judged in my practice. My work relies heavily on validation, and my goal is to establish an alliance with the people I serve as we begin their journey to recovery. A life worth living in recovery is possible, and I'm ready to help you take the first step.
